Brazil!
Many years ago, as a young traveler, I went out into to the world from my North American home to see where life would take me..... Eventually, it brought me here, to Bahia, where I was embraced by a new culture, new family, and a new part of myself unfolding. This place became my home, my second birthplace.
In Bahia, I was shown a vibrant reality that embraced every part of my being. Immersed in an animate new setting, a dormant part of myself was coaxed awake, stimulated by the freshness of the experience, as well as the spirited nature of Bahian culture itself. I dove in deeply, forever changed by a world of affectionate warmth and kindness, earth beauty, exotic fruits and foods, contagious musical rhythms, an embodied sensual way of being, and simplicity beyond what I had ever experienced before. I learned quickly, as if by second nature, the beautiful and song-like language of Brazilian Portuguese, and it's cadence took root in me.
I first lived on the coastal region of the Atlantic Forest, in Ilhéus, where I discovered many off the beaten path beaches and waterfalls, taught English to Brazilians, and owned a beach cabana restaurant. Later I moved to the Valley of Capão, a small village in the Chapada Diamantina National Park region, where I was initiated into motherhood, formed a deep connection with the land there, and fell in love with the rustic lifestyle and diverse people of the place.
Travel can open up one's horizons to a new world. Not only the world "out there", but a new inner world as well. Our culture and environment form and shape us. Blinded by what we have always known, we may fail to challenge ourselves in expanding our realities to encompass more of what is possible and true. Seeking out new experiences is a way to consciously transform our worldview and personal beliefs. It can be life-changing. The change in outer scenery can activate, if we allow it, an inner expedition.
